Sexual abuse and Physical abuse
Sexual abuse and Physical abuse
Abuse covers a wide area which cannot be covered here in depth.
Sexual abuse in childhood is often carried out by people that the child knows, rather than a stranger and the abuser can come from within the family. It causes the adult victim to suffer from anxiety, post- traumatic stress, depression and makes them vulnerable to further abuse in later life. In the case of a male child who is abused by a same sex partner, there is often confusion as to their own sexuality. Psychotherapy and in some cases EMDR(Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)and regression are useful in getting the client to reframe the abuse.
Sexual abuse also occurs in adults as in the case of rape, where sexual intercourse takes place without the consent of the victim. There are many types of rape, but often like in child abuse, the perpetrator is known to the victim. Once again, Psychotherapy, EMDR and hypnosis are effective in reframing the rape and helping the victim to come to terms with their feelings.
Domestic violence or abuse victimises adults and can be physical or emotional. Often the victim feels unable to leave the situation, feels guilty because they believe they somehow caused the abuser to behave in this fashion and are often depressed. There are also practical reasons that prevent them leaving such as children or knowing what support is available to them. The therapist needs to work with the victim to alleviate any feelings of guilt on their part and build up their self esteem so that they can make their own decisions about the future.
