Depression
Depression
Depression is one of the fastest growing mental health problems and is too large a subject to explore here, but it is generally characterised by a state of low mood and lack of motivation. The person can feel sad, anxious, restless, lose interest in pleasurable activities, exhibit bad memory or a lack of concentration, wake up in the early hours of the morning and be unable to get back to sleep, experience a general lack of energy and in some severe cases may be suicidal or have a psychotic episode.
Changes in the neurotransmitters within the brain such as serotonin and dopamine brought about by illness, hormonal changes, ageing, lack of natural sunlight, genes and the social environment of the individual are a few of the causes that lead to depression.
With severe depression it is necessary to combine psychotherapy with antidepressants, and in some cases a period of hospitalisation may be required. However, in milder forms of depression psychotherapy alone is effective.
It is important that depression correctly diagnosed and is not confused with other disorders.
