Tinnitus

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is experienced by sufferers as a noise in the head or in one or both of the ears, and it is not a figment of their imagination, but sounds generated within the auditory system as a part of its normal function. Therefore the sounds heard by the sufferer come from within and does not have an external source. In fact, non-sufferers placed in a quiet environment will often report hearing noises.

Tinnitus is not confined to the elderly and can affect the middle aged and children, though there is no apparent gender difference. It can be the result of long term exposure to occupational noise, to life styles and can initially be generated by damage to the ear caused by age, infection, head and neck injuries, neuromas and some types of medication.

Tinnitus is not an illness in itself, but a symptom of a dysfunction of the auditory system. The symptoms get worse if the sufferer experiences anxiety and depression is often linked to this condition.

Hypnosis can help alleviate the symptoms by reducing anxiety, and allowing the sufferer to habituate to the noise, so that it becomes a tolerable background distraction
